It’s been a minute since I’ve posted – and my wonderful and sometimes Wicked Queen, has suggested that I write about this very topic. A Tale From the Other Side of the Paddle, if you will.

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know I’ve covered a lot of ground. I’ve written about the lighter side of things: how to give a “fun” spanking that keeps the spark alive, and I even put together an eBook on the best ways to convince your wife or girlfriend to get on board with spanking you in the first place. I’ve even geeks out on the technical side, like my tips and tricks for using a spanking machine and how to handle self-spankings when you’re flying solo.
But today, we’re going somewhere else. We’re going to the place where the fun stops and the correction starts.
As Jess has described me before…I’m a “man’s man.” I’m Type A, athletic, and I’m naturally ornery. I’m the kind of guy who doesn’t like being told what to do by anyone: except Jess. So, when I get into what she calls my “jackass phase,” I need more than a playful swat. I need a real, hardline correction to reset my attitude.

A question I’ve been asked often over the years is: “Joey, how do you actually take a real punishment spanking?” People see the intensity Jess brings to the table and wonder how I don’t just jump off the bed or call it quits halfway through. Many of you have admitted that you want the discipline, but when the pain ramps up, your self-preservation instinct kicks in and you “tapout.”
I get it. Your brain is wired to avoid pain. But if you want the benefits of Domestic Discipline, you have to learn how to stay in the zone when things get heavy. Here is my personal survival guide for taking a real punishment spanking.
1. Understanding the Difference: Real vs. Fun
Before you can take a punishment, you have to understand what it is: and what it isn’t.
In a “fun” spanking, there’s a rhythm that’s designed for enjoyment. There’s a warm-up. There’s a thoughtful building of intensity. There are long pauses where she might rub your backside, let the heat settle, and talk to you. It’s a dance. Those can go on for thirty minutes or an hour because the goal is the sensation and the connection.
A REAL punishment spanking is a harsh and relentless correction. When Jess decides I’ve crossed a line, there is no “warm-up.” There are no long pauses. There is zero rubbing. It is one hard swat after another, delivered with the intent to make me rethink my recent life choices.
If you go into a punishment expecting the “fun” rhythm, you’re going to break. You have to mentally shift gears. You have to fully understand and accept that this isn’t about pleasure. You have to get into the mindset that this is about paying a debt for your behavior. It’s a harsh transaction of the accountability YOU asked for. As I’ve often said…there’s nothing FUN about it. Own it, accept it, and prepare for the pain as best you can.

2. The Clock Trick: The Math of Endurance
This is my #1 tip. Right before the first swat or lash lands, I look at the clock.
Why? Because when you’re in the middle of a heavy spanking, time becomes elastic. Ten seconds can feel like ten minutes. Your brain starts screaming that this is going to last forever, and that’s when the self-preservation kicks in. You start thinking, “I can’t take this for much longer,” and you want to bail.
But here’s the reality: Jess spanks for real. As mentioned above – one hard swat after another. She usually delivers about one swat per second, maybe one every two seconds.
So breaking that down into what a recent trip to the woodshed looks like for me:
- 50 to 60 swats with the leather belt (split 25-30 per side).
- 20 swats with ‘Darsi’ – her heavy leather punishment strap – aka The Wicked Strap
- 20 swats with ‘Heidi’ – her recent favorite paddle
In that scenario, that can be up to 100 swats! Even at a slow pace of one swat every two seconds, that is only 200 seconds of actual impact. Which is less than three and a half minutes.

When I look at the clock and see it’s 9:15 PM, I tell myself, “By 9:19, this will be over. I can do anything for four minutes.” Rationalizing the time stops the panic. It takes the “forever” out of the equation and turns it into a manageable window of time. I’ve even looked up at the clock during a whuppin’, and thought “9:17, ok, just about 1 more minute!” I’ve found that to be very helpful. I know that in less than a few minutes, the spanking will be over. The debt will be paid, and any tension in our house will be gone.
3. Breathing: The “Hoo” Technique
If you hold your breath during the spanking, you’re not doing yourself any favors.
When you’re tense and holding your air, the impact of a belt or a strap feels twice as sharp. It “shocks” the system more. You have to learn to breathe through the impact.
I try to use a rhythmic breathing pattern. Deep belly breaths in through the nose while she’s positioning or between swats, and a forceful exhale: a “Hoo!”: exactly at the moment of impact. This does two things:
- Helps keeps your muscles from tightening up, which actually helps your skin and muscle absorb the blow without as much “stinging” trauma.
- It gives you a focal point. You aren’t focusing on the pain; you’re focusing on the breath.
4. Focus on Sets of Five
Don’t think about the 60 swats. Don’t think about the 100. If you think about the total number, the mountain looks too high to climb.
I break every session down into sets of five. In my head, I’m just getting through the next five. One, two, three, four, five. Reset. One, two, three, four, five.

When Jess is working over one side of my backside with the belt, I count those small sets. It makes the punishment feel like a series of small, achievable goals rather than one giant, overwhelming ordeal. It also keeps your brain engaged in a task (counting) rather than just reacting to the stimulus.
5. Body Discipline: Staying Still
For most people – myself included – the hardest part of a punishment spanking isn’t the sting itself. It’s staying in position when every fiber of your being is screaming at you to move.
When that heavy strap, Darsi, lands, the instinct to twist, shift, or pull away is immediate and overwhelming. But I’ve learned the hard way that moving only makes things worse – in more ways than one.
First, there are the punishment spanking rules. If I move beyond what’s reasonable, Jess will either add extra swats at the end, or restart the spanking entirely from the beginning. Neither of those is a direction you want things to go. Second – and this applies even without formal rules – movement throws off the spanker’s aim. A swat that lands on the hip, the lower back, or the back of the legs hurts in a completely different and deeply unpleasant way. Staying still isn’t just about submission. It’s practical self-preservation.
So I plant my legs. I grip the comforter of the bed, or whatever’s in front of me. I fix my eyes on a spot, or glance at that clock and I stay put.

There’s a strange kind of pride in being able to take a full on, punishment spanking without breaking position – in enduring something genuinely harsh and coming out the other side. It’s my way of showing Jess that despite my ornery nature and occasional knack for getting myself into trouble, at the end of the day, I am hers. Completely and without reservation.
That means something to me. Every single time.
6. The Goal: The Reset and Aftercare
The biggest secret to taking a harsh punishment is keeping your eyes on the prize.
Why am I doing this? It’s not because I’m a masochist. It’s because I know that my behavior: the snippiness, the ego, the laziness: has created a wall between me and my wife. I’ve been a “jackass,” and that wall needs to come down.
The spanking is the wrecking ball.
I know that as soon as the woodshed whuppin’ is over, the “Punisher” disappears and my wife comes back. The aftercare in a Domestic Discipline relationship is the best part of the whole dynamic.

Whether it’s me kissing her feet in submission and apology, or her pulling me into a deep, long cuddle while my backside is throbbing, that’s the moment the bond is restored. The guilt is gone. The slate is clean. I’m no longer the guy she’s frustrated with; I’m her man, the one who has submitted to, and endured, quite the severe punishment and the one she has “brought back into the fold.”
If you’re struggling to take a punishment, stop focusing on the strap. Focus on the hug and connection that comes afterward.
Final Thoughts
Taking a real punishment isn’t about being “tough” in the traditional sense. It’s about mental discipline. It’s about using tricks like the clock, breathing, and sets of five to manage your body’s natural desire to run away.
If you’ve been “tapping out,” try these tips next time. Look at the clock. Realize it’s only a few minutes of your life. Breathe. And remember why you’re there in the first place.
Stay strong, stay still, and pay the debt. It’s always worth it in the end.
While there is an abundance of information dealing with how to give consensual adult domestic discipline, this might be the only article I have ever read on how to effectively take it.
Anyone who doesn’t understand the importance of what you’re saying here has not received a REAL punishment spanking or whipping as an adult.
Thanks Leathersmith! As the saying goes…when you know, you know. 👊😎
I have used some of these same techniques. The most effective for me was to breathe. I would get my breathing insync with my wife’s whip. I would inhale during her backstroke and exhale hard on her delivery stroke. I found that if I concentrated on my end of the punishment, then I could take anything she delivered. Not to say it was easy or a walk in the park, but it made it go easier.
Yes, it does make it better. But it’s not an easy thing to do at first, because it goes against your natural instinct to hold your breath or do rapid breathing.
I fully understand the pride thing: I feel a very similar way! I definitely think it is an irony that the less you resist (by tensing up your buttocks muscles) the less painful it is!
I’ve got a question. Is it more advantageous with spankings to have flab or muscle on your buttocks?
Thanks for the comment and the interesting question. While I’ve never been severely overweight, there have definitely been times when I was carrying a little more extra padding than I’d like to admit. That said, even now that I’m in pretty decent shape and don’t have much flab to speak of, I honestly can’t say I’ve noticed any difference in the pain. 🤔
No matter what shape I was in, trips to the woodshed were always rough – but well-earned AND remarkably effective at settling my ass down. LOL
Thanks for the additional thoughts. I’ve noticed postings have been less frequent as of late. Hopefully, you will receive inspiration for more posts again.
I would add this at the end:
Be thankful for your good fortune of a spouse who understands how corporal punishment works and uses it for the common good.
