Happy 2025 Everyone! Wow, I can’t believe our last post was in October of 2024! Someone should get the belt for that! I propose that be Joey. 🤔
Anyway let’s start this up again, shall we?
While we may have referred to it in a post or two, I’m surprised that we haven’t written a post specifically about aftercare. For those of us in TTWD (This Thing We Do) aka Domestic Discipline, or those who are in any sort of consensual power exchange relationships, or doing impact play is, IMHO, only part of the equation. Whether it’s a structured domestic discipline dynamic, a playful exploration of sensation, or a deeper dive into BDSM, what happens after the intensity of a spanking is just as important—if not more so—than the act itself.
Aftercare is the essential follow-through, the moment where the top (or spanker), nurtures and reassures the bottom (the spankee). It is what reconnects both partners after a moment of intense physical and emotional exchange. And yet, despite its critical role, aftercare is often overlooked or underestimated by those who are new to power exchange. Today, I want to share my thoughts about why aftercare is so important, various ways it can be provided, and how it strengthens the bond between partners.
Spanking, discipline, or impact play, even when fully consensual, has the potential to be physically and emotionally draining. Whether it’s a discipline spanking meant to correct behavior or a scene designed purely for pleasure, the body and mind experience a range of intense sensations and emotions.
For the person getting spanked, these experiences can trigger an emotional release—anything from euphoria to vulnerability, from cathartic relief to exhaustion. The nervous system can shift into a heightened state, releasing endorphins and adrenaline during the session, followed by a potential crash afterward.
For the top (the person giving the spanking), there is also an emotional component. Administering discipline, especially when it’s more intense, requires a unique and controlled mindset. Even if they are confident in their role, a spanker may feel a sense of concern, or even guilt afterward. (See: Can You Spank Your Husband Without Feeling Bad?) Aftercare is just as valuable for them, as it reassures them that what they did was received in the spirit in which it was intended.
Different Types of Aftercare
Aftercare is not one-size-fits-all. Just as I’ve mentioned before…every couple or dynamic has its own unique structure, so the way aftercare is given can differ based on individual needs. Below are some common types of aftercare that can help restore balance and reinforce trust after a session:
Physical Comfort – Physical closeness is one of the simplest and most effective forms of aftercare. Holding each other, cuddling, or even just resting together can be deeply reassuring. The warmth and presence of a partner can help regulate emotions and provide a sense of grounding.
Some specific forms of physical aftercare include:
- Lying together, with the bottom’s head on the top’s chest or lap
- Massaging sore areas (if the spanking was more fun and not severe)
- Running fingers through hair or providing gentle touches to soothe the skin (
Verbal Reassurance – Words hold immense power. After an intense spanking, a bottom often needs to hear that they are loved, valued, and safe. Verbal aftercare can include:
- Stating immediately after the spanking, “Ok, your spanking is over.”
- Whispering affirmations like, “You took that so well,” or “I’m so proud of you.”
- Reminding them that they are loved and respected.
This form of aftercare is especially important in a disciplinary dynamic, where a bottom may feel a mix of emotions, including guilt, vulnerability, or a need for reassurance that everything is truly resolved.
Hydration and Nourishment – After an intense session, the body may need to recover physically. Offering water, tea, or (or in Joey’s case, a bourbon – LOL.) Even a small snack like chocolate can help replenish energy levels. This simple act of care not only aids in recovery but also reinforces the nurturing aspect of the relationship.
Time and Space to Process – Not everyone wants immediate physical touch after a scene. Some bottoms may need a moment to breathe, relax, or even be alone before reconnecting. Recognizing and respecting this need is also a form of aftercare.
For those who process emotions internally, journaling or quietly reflecting on what just happened can be helpful. A top can support this by simply remaining present and available when their partner is ready to re-engage.
A Calming Activity – Engaging in a familiar, comforting activity can help bring both partners back to equilibrium. This might include:
- Watching a lighthearted TV show or movie together
- Listening to calming music
- Taking a warm bath or shower together
- Playing with a pet, which can be incredibly grounding
The Lasting Effects of Good Aftercare
When aftercare is done right, it deepens intimacy, builds trust, and reinforces the dynamic in a healthy way. It ensures that both partners feel safe and appreciated, allowing them to continue engaging in their dynamic with confidence.
For my husband and me, aftercare has been the key to maintaining harmony in our relationship. While he thrives in the assertiveness that fuels his business success, our domestic discipline structure provides balance at home. But the spanking itself is never the end of the process. It’s the quiet moments afterward, the way I hold him, the words I whisper, the way we reconnect, that solidify the bond between us.
The same holds true for any couple engaging in power exchange. Whether discipline-based or purely for pleasure, whether occasional or part of a structured dynamic, aftercare ensures that the emotional and physical well-being of both partners is preserved.
Final Thoughts
Power exchange dynamics are built on trust, communication, and mutual respect. Aftercare is not just a routine—it is an act of love and responsibility that ensures the experience remains positive and enriching. Without it, even the most well-intended discipline or play can leave emotional wounds rather than deepen connection.
So the next time you engage in a scene or a structured discipline session, remember: the spanking may be over, but the most important part may still be ahead. Aftercare is the space where healing, reassurance, and love flourish—and that is what makes all the difference.
In a punishment spanking I am given no aftercare. Whatever implement(s) she uses, always leaves my bottom pulsating in pain for as much as an hour. The tenderness finally subsides after a couple of days, but the marks last over a week. Aftercare, can easily lead to our having sex, so part of my punishment is always “no sex“ for a minimum of 3 or more days. How much time passes after Joey is given a punishment spanking , does he “get lucky”?
I always provide aftercare, and feel it is important, but, as I’ve said before, “To each their own.” As far as no sex after a spanking, I use to hold that position earlier on, but over the years, I’ve concluded that the spanking is the punishment, and then afterwards, the slate is clean, so to speak. So, there are oftentimes that no sex happens and we just cuddle, but there are times where we do make love after a spanking, or later that night.
We have never done aftercare as a completely separate thing. We tend to have sex after a spanking, during which my wife tends to multitask and massage my freshly-spanked buttocks. Sometimes, there may be kissing. If not, she often says soothing things not too far removed from the examples above. Our feelings of intimacy are increased by my vulnerability resulting from the fact that we have sex with me naked and my wife wearing a basque outfit. By the time I’m finished, we have enormous feelings of intimacy.
It may not qualify as aftercare but she does enjoy teasing me about how uncomfortable it is for me to sit and reminding me that she is the one who rendered me not wishing to sit.
In an odd way I enjoy her teasing and even sometimes embellish my reaction when I try to sit to let her know what a good job she’s done!
Love it! Thanks for sharing Glenmore!
I had a punishment spanking coming Saturday night, but J texted me saying we’re having company Saturday so get ready for it tonight instead. Leave out hmm at least 3 implements – your choice, but you’ll be standing while eating supper tonight for sure. ❤️J
Joey do you get love notes like this some times?
